Exemplary tenant … Edna Moore.EDNA MOORE is an ”exemplary tenant”, but that will not stop the NSW government from selling the housing commission home she has lived in for 45 years.
The 73-year-old widow and grandmother of 14 has been told that her three-bedroom fibro house in Cartwright, near Liverpool, will be sold and she could be forced to relocate to public housing in Campbelltown.
Mrs Moore and her son, Victor, say that she seems to be a victim of her good tenancy. It was days after an inspection – during which a Housing NSW officer remarked on the impressive condition of her home, including an original 1960s kitchen – that she received a warning she would have to move.
In the 1970s, Mrs Moore and her husband, a council worker, sometimes went without food rather than miss paying the rent.
”The rent always came first,” she said. ”We lived on what was left after the rent was paid. I didn’t waste money; never smoked and never drank.”
She said her doctor has asked Housing NSW to reconsider making her move because he thinks it would take a toll on her already fragile health.
”I wouldn’t be the same anywhere else. I wouldn’t know anybody,” Mrs Moore said.
The move appears to be part of a push by the Minister for Family and Community Services, Pru Goward, to make the stock of public housing work harder. Ms Goward has earmarked 11,000 public tenants who live alone in multi-bedroom houses for relocation.
The Labor MP for Liverpool, Paul Lynch, who has referred to Mrs Moore in Parliament as an ”exemplary tenant”, said the government was behaving like a ”slum landlord”.
”The long and the short of it is that Housing NSW wants Mrs Moore out of the house so it can flog it off to make money,” he said.
Housing NSW appears to have softened its stance. Asked to explain Mrs Moore’s treatment, a spokesman said: ”Housing NSW identified this property for sale because it is an old fibro property nearing the end of its economic life. In light of additional information received, Housing NSW will meet her this week and reconsider the sale.”
