Tax an incentive to stop polluting

Tax an incentive to stop polluting

MIKE Burston states, regarding the carbon tax, the plan is to artificially manufacture and price emission credit certificates while compelling us to pay for them, stating this is a new form of financial slavery. (The Border Mail, June 16).

The reality is that the government has assigned a value on the carbon that polluters dump into the atmosphere.

Because it will now cost producers to “dump” this gas they will look for ways to not produce this waste in order to avoid the tax rather than pass the cost on to us.

If producers don’t cut costs by cutting pollution someone may undercut them.

They cannot rely on simply passing the cost on to us.

In some cases we may pay a little more for goods and services but the government has compensated us for this with tax cuts and/or direct payments.

To state that we will become financial slaves is ludicrous.

Mr Burston goes on to say, “Controlling who can emit carbon dioxide gives the political class an excuse and mechanism for controlling every activity on the planet”. Again this is an error of fact.

There is no control on who emits carbon, anyone can, however if they do they will be taxed, reducing the incentive to do so.
