Punches and kicks were thrown between players, but police arel not certain what sparked the incident, in which three people suffered minor injuries.
“The sporting arena is not the place to have a fight. If people want to fight, they should take up boxing instead,” Detective Inspector Coffen said.
“We don’t stand for violence. The local district football association has said violence will not be tolerated on the playing field and we support them.
“It is a terrible example for children watching and it sends a bad message.”
He said investigators were hoping someone may have recorded mobile phone footage of the brawl and added that up to 40 witnesses may have to be interviewed about the incident.
He said police would pursue any allegations of assault or affray.
