Magic unfazed despite defeats

BROADMEADOW Magic coach Damien Smith, denies his team is suffering from nerves despite the league leaders losing their last two games.

Magic led the ladder by five points only a fortnight ago but that was reduced to one heading into the start of round 13.

Consecutive losses to Charlestown City and Hamilton Olympic have raised questions over Broadmeadow’s title challenge but Smith maintains his team is not burdened by the weight of expectation, but rather suffering a minor concentration lapse.

”No we’re not feeling the pressure as such. There are four teams now that can make a run for the finals and Newcastle Jets [youth team] have been up there at the top alongside us, so there’s nothing new with that,” Smith said. ”In saying that, we’ve let our lead slip a bit over the last two weeks and it’s getting to the point where we have to start taking results and we haven’t been doing that in the last two games.”

Broadmeadow are hoping to return to winning ways against Weston Workers today at Wanderers Oval and will stick with the same game plan they have used throughout the season. Smith has focused on improving confidence within the team to get more consistent performance. ”We don’t have to change anything as such, it’s more of a mental thing. We need to be more consistent and we need to regain our focus as a team,” Smith said.

Meanwhile, five Magic players have been selected for the NBN State League squad to play Newcastle Jets in two games. Josh Piddington, Luke Virgili, Jon Griffith, Scott Pettit and Peter Haynes have been called up for the July 18 and August 8 games. ”I’m really happy for those players, they’ve deserved to be called up and get this chance and I hope they come back without any injuries,” Smith said. ”I don’t see it as a distraction; there’s a few weeks until the first game and they have deserved this opportunity; they’ve been playing great football all year.”
