Four houses were auctioned on The Block on Sunday, but did you realise they were sold in three separate shows?
Seeking to take out all three medal places for the evening (and possibly renovate the podium quickly and flip it for a profit) Nine broke the reality show finale into three episodes: The Block – Grand Final, Auction and Winner Announced.
The three separate “episodes” then took out 3rd, 2nd and 1st place respectively. Winner Announced was watched by an average of 4.161 million viewers on metropolitan and regional televisions, peaking at 4.258 million and in the process winning the night for Nine everywhere except Perth. Interestingly the finale brought new viewers to television as rival programs Sunday Night and MasterChef kept the majority of their audiences, both watched by 1.1 million viewers and marking only slight drops on the previous week.
Nine’s first win on a Sunday without The Voice combined with Wednesday’s anticipated Origin ratings win should see Nine coast to a win for the week despite their return to the world of Big Bang Theory with seven episodes scheduled this week and leave the ratings war with Seven on a knife edge as we reach the half way point in the ratings calendar just in time for the Olympics. Nine will be hoping next Sunday’s Domestic Bliss special can carry them across the line once more.
As for the stars, the four couples from The Block may want to invest their combined winnings of $1,843,001.01, with today’s-reality-star-tomorrow’s-very-well-promoted-busker Karise Eden, The Voice winner, found out when only a few hundred fans rocked up to see her perform for free in Pitt Street Mall last Friday.
The secret to lasting ratings it seems is to be Charlie Sheen, for the winning wizard saw his new sitcom Anger Management debut to record numbers (for a scripted comedy on cable television) last Thursday night in the US.
