JULIA Gillard has declined to back Speaker Peter Slipper returning to the chair if he is cleared of allegations against him.
Pressed on the ABC, Ms Gillard dodged around the issue, saying there was a legal case on.
Mr Slipper has been accused by a staffer, James Ashby, of sexual harassment.
Ms Gillard said: ”I’m not going to take it further than Mr Slipper is dealing with the legal matters in front of him.”
But if he is cleared, Mr Slipper – who still has the role of Speaker although he has stood aside from presiding over the House while the allegations are being dealt with – would presumably want the public vindication of taking up his role again.
