A couple has been hospitalised after a fire that gutted a cafe in Melbourne’s north.
The man and woman were taken to the Austin Hospital suffering facial burns and smoke inhalation after the fire at Miss Succulent cafe on Dundas Street.
The fire, which firefighters estimate caused up to $100,000 worth of damage, broke out about 3.45pm.
The couple operated the cafe and lived on the premises.
The fire spread throughout the whole single-storey, brick veneer property, according to the fire brigade.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade Commander Costa Katsikis said efforts to extinguish the blaze were hampered because the residence was cluttered with furniture.
MFB investigators are on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
Commander Katsikis said the close call came as a timely reminder of winter months for residents to make sure smoke alarms were working, fire plans were in place and exit routes were unobstructed.
